Flip-Plate Valve Filter Bed

We primarily provide a comprehensive range of ancillary products for water supply and wastewater treatment systems, including trash interception, chemical dosing and reaction, sedimentation, water collection, sludge removal, and filtration, as well as biological media and aerators for wastewater treatment projects.

Overview of the Water Distribution System for Flap-Valve Filter Beds The flap-valve filter-bed technology originated with Sulzer of Switzerland and derives its name from the fact that the backwash drain flap can pivot between 0° and 90° during operation. Flap-valve filter beds offer numerous advantages, including a high pollutant interception capacity, excellent filtration performance, reduced backwash water consumption, and superior cleanliness of the filter media after backwashing. In addition, their simple structure and lower capital investment have led to their gradual adoption and application across China in recent years. The water distribution system for flap-valve filter beds falls under the category of low-resistance systems. It comprises a main distribution and aeration channel formed by horizontal distribution pipes, vertical distribution pipes, and vertical aeration pipes, as well as multiple lateral distribution pipes that together create a dual-layer distribution and aeration network. Because each distribution pipe within the filter bed is independently segregated, this structural feature theoretically ensures good uniformity in water and air distribution, while also placing less stringent demands on construction compared with typical low-resistance distribution systems. The backwashing method used in flap-valve filter beds differs from that of other air–water backwashed filter beds: flap-valve filter beds employ a closed-valve backwashing approach, in which the backwashing and drainage processes are conducted separately. The backwashing sequence consists of three main stages—air scouring, combined air–water scouring, and water scouring—followed by a separate water-only scouring stage. During both the water and air scouring phases, no effluent is discharged; after each backwashing stage is completed, the system is allowed to stand still for several tens of seconds before draining. Consequently, when properly commissioned, flap-valve filter beds virtually eliminate the risk of filter-media loss.
II. Construction of the Water Distribution System for Flip-Plate Valve Filter Beds
The distribution system for water and air in the flip-plate valve filter bed consists of the filter bed’s central water channel, vertical water distribution pipes embedded in the top slab of the central water channel, vertical air distribution pipes, and horizontal water distribution pipes installed at the bottom of the bed and connected to the water and air distribution pipes.
The lateral distribution water pipe is made of HDPE (ABS). Its cross-section is circular at the top and square at the bottom, with the upper semicircular portion serving as the air-distribution space and the lower square portion as the water-distribution space. The bottom of the pipe is designed with perforations according to specified requirements: water-distribution holes are provided, air-vent holes are installed on both sides of the pipe, and an air-release hole is provided at the top of the pipe.
The vertical water distribution pipes and vertical air distribution pipes are made of stainless steel, with air inlet ports provided on the air distribution pipes. During construction of the top slab of the intermediate water distribution channel between the vertical water distribution pipes and the air distribution pipes in the filter bed, embedded components shall be installed to ensure that the elevations at the top and bottom of the water and air distribution pipes are consistent.
