Overview
Reaction and flocculation is the initial and critical step in the three primary physical treatment processes employed in conventional water treatment plants, and its effectiveness directly impacts both the quality of the treated effluent and the plant’s production capacity. The input and output of substances are driven by mass transfer, which encompasses molecular diffusion, convective diffusion, and bulk flow. When source water containing suspended solids, colloids, and dissolved substances is dosed with coagulants (or flocculants), the liquid and solid phases typically exhibit nearly synchronous flow characteristics. As the water flows through various reaction units, continuous changes in the flow channels cause solid and liquid phase particles to undergo not only bulk flow but also pulsatile motion in all directions—up, down, left, and right—accompanied by vortices that give rise to convective diffusion. This enhanced mixing significantly increases the collision frequency among impurity particles in the source water, thereby promoting more efficient floc formation.
